Fisher and Underwood make engagement official

The power of Twitter has struck again. Rumors of an engagement between Ottawa Senators forward Mike Fisher and country music superstar Carrie Underwood popped up all over the place after a friend of Underwood’s family announced on his Twitter page congratulating the pair on their recent engagement. Fisher and Underwood have been linked together romantically for about a year. Underwood is regularly in attendance in the luxury boxes at Scotiabank Place.

Zetterberg latest broken Wing

The Detroit Red Wings just can’t stay healthy. Forward Henrik Zetterberg became the latest in a long line of broken wheels on Thursday night. He went down late in the first period against the Tampa Bay Lightning after colliding with defenseman Mattias Ohlund and did not return. After driving himself to the hospital for an MRI, it was revealed that Zetterberg is going to be gone for at least two weeks with a slight separation in his left shoulder.

Canadiens set to embark on two-week road trip

Is there any team lower than the Montreal Canadiens? With 10 games played in December, the Canadiens are 3-6-1 for a whopping seven points, and now, they head out for a seven-game road trip that will take them through the New Year before ultimately, and perhaps mercifully, returning home on Jan. 3. Accompanying the team as usual will be Andrei Markov for their first game against the New York Islanders on Saturday night, but for the first time since their first game, Markov will lace up the skates.

Philadelphia’s original number 32

Now that the dust is starting to settle around the Roy Halladay move to Philadelphia, the breakdowns and analyses of the trades have begun to take precedence among sports headlines across North America. Halladay was revealed as the newest Phillie in a media conference on Wednesday afternoon where, for the first time, he donned his new red and white jersey. An unnoticed piece to anybody outside of Toronto’s fanbase was the large “34” on the back of the jersey. Doc’s number 32 had to be replaced thanks to Philadelphia’s retiring in 1989 the number in honor of one of the greatest pitchers of all-time - Steve “Lefty” Carlton.

Lee was part of the trade, too

Cliff Lee has been traded. Everybody knows it, but nobody is talking about it. Cliff Lee is arguably one of the 10 best pitchers in baseball, but was just a pawn in the Philadelphia Phillies’ attempts to secure Roy Halladay as a long-term piece of the pie. In 2008, Lee finished ahead of Halladay in voting and won the Cy Young Award, largely because the voters weren’t paying attention, but since then, Halladay has shown that he is in fact the “one” to Lee’s “one-A”.

True Predictions: Colts Will Lose, Saints Will Win and Home Sweet Home

Last week’s 2-3 record places the season mark at 38-29. I need some wins and let’s hope that some home-cooking will be the recipe for success this week. We’ve got six games picked and I’m going with the home team for all. Last week the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers took expected victories, but in statement games I was off the mark as the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings got it done over the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Bengals, respectively. The Miami Dolphins kept their wild card hopes alive by knocking off the Jacksonville Jaguars, who currently hold a wild card spot.

Conklin’s Classic streak in serious jeopardy

How many people want to see Ty Conklin traded to Boston or Philadelphia before Jan. 1? Conklin, a 33-year-old native of Phoenix, Arizona, is a goaltender for the St. Louis Blues. He also has the distinction of being the only player to have played in all three outdoor NHL games. In all three, he was also not his respective team’s primary goaltender within a month of each game. If he doesn’t find a way to get himself into a Bruin or Flyer jersey by the New Year, his streak will sadly end.

Rask and Varlamov topping rookie lists

The rookies in the NHL are making a huge impression on the fans nationwide. Everybody knows what John Tavares is doing for the Islanders as well as Niclas Bergfors in New Jersey, but there are two freshman goaltenders making a splash as well – Washington’s Semyon Varlamov and Boston’s Tuukka Rask. Both were first-round draft picks; Rask in 2005 and Varlamov in 2006, and both are dominating shooters across the league.

The time of the Maple Leafs is now. Toronto is arguably the hottest team in the Eastern Conference, and with some aggressive offensive play from youngster Phil Kessel and sorely missed quality goaltending from primary net-minder Vesa Toskala, the Leafs are quickly turning an abysmal 1-7-5 start into something salvageable by New Years, and beyond that, who knows? The upcoming problem for the Leafs though – as if they didn’t have enough – is that their January schedule looks about as rough as their October ended up being.
